A sign of bad journalism?

The new installation of AIM always opens up a news tab in my Firefox of what's on in the day, and also includes videogame news. Upon finding this, I felt my urge to kill rising. It's understood that games, over time, will lose their flavour and everyone will move on to what's the newest thing. However, the reasons mentioned as to why Halo will fail are just..ugh. It's convincing me that this reviewer has never played HALF of the games he mentions.

1. Halo's not the only must-play first-person shooter. While Halo 3 sits in the top five most played Xbox 360 games (around the number two or three spot), two of Activision's Call of Duty games, World At War and Modern Warfare, are immensely popular. For that matter, so are Gears of War 2 and Left 4 Dead, which offer new multiplayer modes, better AI and better graphics.
Yes, yes. I've read it time and time again how much better CoD is than Halo. However, that is not the reason why Halo will fail. CoD is known for it's war games (which, frankly, bore the ever-living shit out of me), high FPS rate and lack of dropped games. But it looks boring. I don't want games that look like real war because if I wanted to, I could go do that myself. It's the same reason why I will never buy a sports game: why use a controller when you can just go outside and do it yourself?! Videogames are my escape from reality, and I want it to be as separate from reality as possible. I want STORIES, not accuracy.
It's obvious this person has never played GoW2 or L4D by himself, or he would realize how glitchy the AI is. Many a times have a cursed a streak over Bill being the dumbass and getting himself killed over and over again on the rescue missions. But I just tell myself he's old and senile, so he doesn't really know what he's doing. Nor shall I mention how stupid it is for Locust to "take turns" on you in Horde mode, instead of bumrushing you all at once or actually using any strategy whatsoever.
2. Halo for the Nintendo DS: It sounded like a dream come true. Players could take Halo wherever they wanted, battling against others through the Wi-Fi Connection and experiencing insane gun battles. Along the way, however, Microsoft inexplicably pulled the plug, even though the game was near completion, according to a report from IGN. Perhaps the big M thought Nintendo would have too much to gain.
Has this person not heard of the current economic crisis? Does he even know that Microsuck is buying out Ensemble for the same reasons? Why invest a lot of money into a system that they're taking a risk on? I myself never thought that a shooter would work well on the DS, since I don't tihnk I could aim as accurately with just a stylus. The DS is also aimed at a MUCH younger audience that the 360 is. So yes, kids, you can play that game too that you really shouldn't be playing because of pricks that swear online.
Wait, does the DS even HAVE headphones so that you could talk to teammates? I didn't think so...
3. Bungie and Microsoft went all out for Halo 3's September 2007 release, with not one but three editions to choose from. The ultimate choice was the Legendary Edition, packaged in a facsimile of Master Chief's helmet. Unfortunately, many copies still dwell on store shelves 18 months later. Nowadays, the Legendary Edition, once retailing for $130, can be picked up for a meager $40. If you already own the game, you can buy the helmet for $10 or less.
Wait, what? I've only seen the regular copies of Halo 3 selling for $40. I have not seen any copies of the LE in stores at all. Amazon itself is selling it for $120, and only individual users are selling it for as low as $40. But in stores, no, it is not selling for that low. You, Robert Workman, are an ass who doesn't do research.
4. The development team that got Halo off the ground, Bungie, won't be with the franchise much longer. After a falling out with Microsoft following the release of Halo 3, the company announced it was moving on at the end of the year once it wraps up Halo 3: ODST, a Master Chief-less prequel of the mega-successful first-person shooter that lets players fight as an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper during the events that lead up to Halo 3.
Yeah, and? I am one who enjoys game companies doing something new and different, creating new stories and characters to love (this is the reason for my avid hatred for Nintendo). So what if they don't do another Halo? How do you think people felt after Bungie did the last Marathon game?
Also, I'm pretty sure ODST takes place during the events of Halo 2, after part of New Mombasa gets taken out. Technically, that is "during the events that lead up to Halo 3", but apparently this guy has never played 2 either, so probably doesn't even know anything existed before 3.
5. When Microsoft announced that it wanted a Halo film in 2005, people got excited. Then fans found out that The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson became attached to the project and everything went nuts. However, it turns out he wasn't directing it. Instead, first-time director Neill Blomkamp singed up for duty. After a pair of brief promo clips that aired around the time of Halo 3's release, interest in the movie waned and studios lost interest due to high budget and an in-the-works script. It may never see the light of day. Too bad the same couldn't be said for the new Street Fighter flick.
Yes, I jumped in excitement when I thought Peter Jackson was involved in the Halo movie too. However, it is WETA, who did all of the props, makeup and CG in LotR, that made all of the weapons and a working warthog in the video promos and the museum commercials.WETA is OWNED by Peter Jackson, which is something that's easily revealed through a Google search. So Jackson would have been involved in it somehow, but not directly. As for interest waning, things started going down hill at that time economy-wise. Nothing to do with Bungie or Microsoft's fault.
6. Although ODST looks cool, we have to face the facts. Number one, Master Chief, the lead character from the first three Halo games, won't star in it. Number two, although it will feature a whole new side story where your character seeks out teammates in a bombed out New Mombasa and various multiplayer options like 24 new maps, it won't be an entirely new game. Sure, it'll be fun, but it's going to end way too quickly.
As I have mentioned before, I like new characters; what I like even more are the unnamed characters that work in the background and don't get all the glory for the hard work they do. The ODSTs are the specially trained marines who have to deal with problems that ordinary soldiers do not face. They were there from the beginning, from BEFORE Halo, and involved in the training of the Spartans. Plus, they are called to face things that even Master Chief himself found difficult, but all without genetic engineering and 2-ton space suits with shields. That, my friend, takes a whole lot of balls.
7. You know a game has run into trouble when you've got an enemy in your sights, you pull the trigger and miss. Complaints ran rampant through the Halo community over at Bungie.net when users learned about the inefficiency of the battle rifle, as bullet trajectories curved and missed their targets. Honestly, if you can't count on your firepower, we're not sure what you can count on. Just check around Bungie's forums and you're bound to see the complaints.
Honestly, is this guy too much of an idiot to know what lag is? Yes, it's on the forums over and over. "Weennnhh lag lag lag ruined my K/D ratio! Why does CoD not have this problem WENH?" Deal with it. Buy a freaking better modem!
8. When someone says "Let's play some Halo," they don't point at Halo Wars and suggest a real-time strategy battle. They want to shoot someone's face off with a Needler. As great as Halo Wars is (just read our review), it's not exactly what the Halo community had in mind for the series' next big step. (On the other hand, at least we didn't get a lame Warthog racing game.)
After reading this whole thing, I don't WANT to read your review.
Diversity! It is essential to maintaining your current audience while grabbing the attentions of those who like strategy games with an already existing story. This is not the same with Nintendo, where it's new characters in different places with different powers. Halo Wars is an entirely new story, with just a different means of telling it. Consider it similar to an audiobook extension of an already existing book.
Hey, I would have...somewhat...liked a Warthog racing game. Many a time I've simply found myself racing around Rat's Nest on a mongoose out of sheer boredom (and when I know I'm never going to catch up in score). But if Mario can do it, why not Master Chief? Think of it, dropping stickies and trip mines behind your vehicles to serve as proverbial banana peels.
9. As happy as we are with all of the downloadable Halo 3 maps (including the upcoming Mythic Pack, which currently doesn't have a release date), we're a little saddened that the offerings are so rare. There's the Cold Storage Pack, the Legendary Map Pack, the Heroic Map Pack and a few promo videos. In a year and a half, that's all we received. All of these maps are excellent (especially for die-hard Halo fans), but for an incredibly popular franchise, we expected more, like downloadable characters, all new missions and other Halo-related goodies.
I'd like to see this guy design a map of his very own, with respawning weapons and interactice environment. Go on, do it! Does no one understand how long programming these things take? As for downloadable characters and new armour, no. I'm absolutely SICK of hearing complaints about it. You'd think 15 new armour (with upon hundreds, if not thousands, of combinations) to choose from would keep people satisfied, when such an option was never available before in 1 and 2. Be happy with what you have, and stop complaining about it.
10. Halo 3's sweet, but its inconclusive ending left a lot to be desired. (Spoiler: Cortana and Master Chief are literally left hanging on the other side of the universe.) Maybe one day, with Halo 3: ODST or a future Director's Cut, we'll finally know what fate awaits Master Chief and his virtual cohort. For now, we can only wonder.
No, YOU can only wonder because you only play games inside that tiny little box of yours with no room for flexibility. Play Marathon, you jackass. It's meant to be bittersweet because no other ending would have sufficed (except for Master Chief ACTUALLY being dead). I like how he leaves "SPOILER" in the middle of the fucking paragraph. Note: if you have a spoiler, put it at the end of your post. That way, you'll keep readers happy.

(image drawn by fiance and coloured by me)

Ah, where do I begin. Gaming with my fiance has been the almost-central part of our lives, keeping us sane during the majority of our long-distance relationship. It started off with table-top roleplaying over Skype and transgressed to shooting each other over Halo.
My fiance was the entire reason I got so avid in video games again. Before, I only had a PS2 and only played RPs, like Xenosaga and Tales of Eternia, with long periods of time between getting new games. In the meantime, I simply replayed old games (Xenogears, FF7, Chrono Trigger, etc).
However, everything changed once he started ranting over Skype to me about Oblivion, which his then-coworker showed him on the 360. It being a first person RP, I thought less of it, thinking I would get bored with it too easily and didn't care much about it, until I finally came from a visit from England and saw it. My jaw simply dropped. "This is what videogames look like now?! I can barely even count the pixels!" was my first thought (yes, my VG experience had dwindled to almost nought with all the travelling I did). I was left quite impressed, wanting to give it a try and avid to make the ugliest Oblivion character ever.
It was my turn to turn him over to the dark side of Halo, after a few of my Brit friends introduced me to Halo 2 (and boy did I REALLY suck back then). I ranted and raved to him about it, which he also thought less of, because it was a FPS, and those can get old kind of fast. We bought Halo 1 and 2 at the same time, and played for 2 weeks straight on the Campaigns, with hearts racing, jaws dropping and yells of frustration at both the storyline and our own iniquitable deaths. We were hooked and nothing was going to get the 360's grip off us.
The grip tightened even more when he got me a 360 of my very own last Christmas, so that we could at least play while I was in Long Island, and ever since, my own small collection of games has grown over such a short period of time, through my own purchases, or his fuelling of my addiction through presents. Weekends were spent playing through the Halo 3 campaign over and over to get the metagame scoring achievements, and simply just going at each other in a Custom Game. It kept us together, laughing and yelling for stupid things, and venting any frustration I felt with schooling by hearing a lovely death yell eminate from my tiny tv. If anything, I have him to thank for rekindling my love for videogames and tolerating my rantings about them.

Now that all that good stuff has been put forward, I must deal with the downside of gaming with my fiance. And that is me. I, to quote him, am a sore loser. I'd like to not think of it that way, that I am not upset at people for killing me, but for the fact that I cannot kill them first. But it stills boils down to simply that: sore loser. Being from the Caribbean, I can't help but be competitive and frustrated when I fail. Failure simply is not an option for me. It drives me nuts, thinking that I've played Halo a lot longer than he has, yet I can NEVER seem to beat him in a one-on-one. Many a times I have turned off the machine, upset at my lack of skills, cursing at the controller for not doing what I wanted it to do. Yet, there he is, giving me a hug and telling me I'd do better next time. I still pout and sulk about it, but the simple fact that he doesn't take it to heart and still plays with me week after week must mean something.

Thank you, Sean, for making me love videogames again and tolerating my crappy attitude everytime there's a sticky on my head.

Blog Banter: My Wish for the Year

Welcome, welcome to Blog Banter, the monthly blogging extravaganza headed by bs angel! Blog Banter involves our cozy community of enthusiastic gaming bloggers, a common topic, and a week to post articles pertaining to said topic. The results are quite entertaining and can range from deeply insightful to ROFLMAO. Any questions about Blog Banter should be directed here. "In a perfect world, to me, I still think it would be cool as hell to see Ryu from ‘Street Fighter’ and Scorpion from Mortal Kombat. I just think it would be cool. To me, ‘Mortal Kombat vs. Street Fighter vs. Tekken vs. Virtua Fighter’ would be the coolest in the world. The reality is you’re going to have [the other development teams] on the other side of the world. So, who makes it? Who does what? It would be awesome. And who knows what they’re gonna say if this is big."

That was a quote from the loveable Ed Boon in July of this year, co-creator of Mortal Kombat, and apparently bearer of an extra Y-chromosome, evident from that picture. Said quote is relevant because of the Blog Banter question of the month:

If you could ask for one thing this year from the gaming industry as a whole, what would it be and why?

In my early awkward years as a gamer girl in seventh grade, I also longed to see a fight between Chun Li and Sonya Blade, just to see who would kick more ass. I eventually grew out of that stage, and took a more serious eye to games and their contents. However, it seems some people will never get out of it. So my wish this year is for the end of video game crossovers. There are actually a lot more than people realize, and rarely are they ever successful.
Battletoads Double Dragon
First up is Battletoads Double Dragon. Now, I played both of the original games in my extreme youth, and their sheer difficulty got me bored and frustrated really quickly. However, such an amalgamation of characters changed everything. Double Dragon's plot was based on dealing with gang war and rescuing a girlfriend, but this...thing disregarded that plot altogether. The game was made solely by the Battletoads team and just shoved the DD dudes in there for novelty. That's probably why the Battletoads logo is so much bigger.

Capcom vs. SNK
Seriously, does this game really need THAT many characters? Sure, it let you pit characters of your wildest dreams against each other (how about some Mai x Cammy boob action?) But couldn't some more work have been put into this to make it look more...what's the word...cohesive? It's basically a cut and paste of characters sprites that just don't fit together well. Simply look at that shot of Ken performing a Hadoken against Mai. Ken has short stumpy legs with thick feet, while Mai takes on the more animesque style of mile-long legs. Not to mention the pixellage of her boobs are roughly the size of Ken's head. Varying character proportions does not a good game make.

Namco x Capcom
Another Capcom amalgamation that never even got to the U.S, and took the form of a cross between action and strategy RPG (you'll understand action RPG if you've ever played a "Tales of" game). On the left are two original characters that drive the main plot, while on the right are all the Namco and Capcom characters you can ever think of as basic side characters that mysteriously appear in the main characters' world. That's the plot. You work alongside them in themed stages, and then they get replaced by some other gimmicky characters. Woohoo. You may only get some of the references and characters' moves if you've played some of Namco's other games or know something of their backstory. There's a reason this crap stayed in the Japan. Nice opening song, though.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympics
I've been predicting a game with Mario and Sonic since I was 11, and it finally came true (I also predicted a Sonic RPG, but whatever). Unfortunately, it had to be something stupid like the Olympics. Where there's running. Which is Sonic's forte. I'm sorry, but a fat plumber with a wind drag for a moustache is, keeping it canon, not going to beat the infamous blue hedgehog, no matter how fast you want to button smash.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC
When I first heard this was going to happen, I wanted to rip my eyeballs out. Seriously?! The last time there was a DC fighting game was on the Genesis, and that game sucked so much ass. Now you want to take the stiff animation of MK, throw in some DC characters, and make the whole shenanigan 3D. I force myself not to look any further into this game, but can anyone tell me if gallons of red paint splash about when you punch someone in the face?
Don't get me wrong. Not all crossovers are bad. Just the majority of them are. Take the below examples.

Marvel vs. Capcom
Ok, yet another Capcom babymaker, but this one was actually done well because *fanfare* Capcom did the animation for the Marvel characters as well. Now, I can actually see a Chun Li vs. Psylocke fight actually look proportioned. Not to mention it had a finger-saving mode, where each button was assigned to a special move. Plus you got to fight Onslaught, which I praise as one of the most interesting villains Marvel has ever created (go read some comics if you want to know what I'm talking about).

Kingdom Hearts
Ok, I still refuse to play this colourful kid-fest of cute crossed with emo storyline, but from people's praises and reactions to this game series, it's apparently well-liked. What makes this different from Namco x Capcom is that the Disney characters are integrated into the KH story, no backstory knowledge required when you meet any characters.
Smash Brothers
Another game I refuse to even give a glance at, simply because I don't enjoy the gimmick of throwing characters out of their normal lives and place them in a slugfest of silliness. However, the inclusion of new characters from other games has kept fans enjoying Smash Brothers and its sequels, placing bets who is going to show up in the next game. I have no proof, but I'm sure this game is the reason why Soul Calibur added Link, Spawn, Darth Vader and Yoda to their console specific games.

So that's my wish for the year. No more characters from different companies being mashed together into one game, please. It will rarely ever work.

Japan: land of the perverted and unsatisfied.

I'm sure most people by now have at least given Mirror's Edge a try. Whether you're happy with it or not is besides the point of this post. Apparently, the good ol' crazies over in Japan are not too happy with the way Faith looks.

A hint of some reactions over at Danny Choo

Apparently, the Japanese prefer their women with wedge-shaped chins that don't exist and large Western eyes, which a lot of Asian people have gotten surgery to have (including Jackie Chan). And large chests with nipples. Can't forget that. Little do they forget that Japanese have very little body fat due to the mostly healthy stuff they eat. Meaning lack of boobs and asses.

Here's another gander of alterations made

You can see that they smoothed out her arm musculature, lowered her cheekbones and inflated her boobs a tad. Just looks to me like she would fall over from the weight of her own boobs, not be able to hold up her own weight with all the gymnastics she has to pull of, and have shorter lower jaws (makes it easier to swallow all that bukkake I guess, but it looks to me as if she has a tremendous overbite). Although, I shouldn't really be surprised, considering how many panty dispensers there are and the complacency with groping and fondling on public trains in that country.

Bad figures

See, this is the perfect example of why McFarlane needs to stop making Halo figures
I admit, I gave in and bought a Brute and Arbiter figure, but if I could go back and stop myself from doing that, I would. As detailed as these figures are, they're still crap. McFarlane is best at making detailed static figures. Good articulation does not exist, hands don't hold weapons properly, and you have to put them in the stupidest poses in order for them to stand up (as evidenced from the pictures in the link; honestly, it looks like Master Chief is constipated).
Bungie, please stop using McFarlane to make these tiny figures that are overpriced. You're lowering my faith in you.

Upgrade!

Tada! I've upgraded from my tiny Nokia piece of crap I've had for a year to a beautiful new blue Chocolate 3!
Helloooooooooo, baybeh! I actually tried the Blackberry Pearl, but it's annoying to be sitting at your laptop, sending an email, and then having your phone vibrating, informing you that you've just sent an email. 8/ Not to mention that it never rang when I got calls!
However, my new blue baby has already been adorned with Halo 3 wallpapers. Now I just need to find an appropriate ringtone to convert and edit, find a hard cover for it, and find some way of attaching my Renji and Senna phone charms to it.
The weekend trip to Ohio was quite2 relaxing, even though long. The drive took us through miles and miles of grape fields, as well as through an Indian reservation that had the best sign ever:

"COME C Y U SHOULD GET PUNCHED!"

I have NO idea what the sign was pertaining to, but it's a shame I couldn't get a picture of it. Also saw the best name for a street: Two Rod Street. Only to be followed 5 minutes later by Three Rod Street. Why do people do this?!
And here's a video to remind you of the old-school gamer within you:

Choices

I discovered from Hawty McBloggy's that there's a FLAG (Fight Like A Girl) tournament on the 25th-26th of this month to raise money for Breast cancer and Cervical cancer. 10 bucks to enter each competition (there's a Free For All and a Teams competition), and although I'm tempted to play, I'd feel terrible for any team I end up on and make them lose (yeah, I'm convinced I'm that bad). On the other hand, it might be fun and the 10 bucks are for a good cause. I've always felt a bit bad about playing online and contributing to the loss by being easy pickings. I'll have to think about it, maybe.
On another note, I'll be flying tomorrow for my mini-vacation, but most of it will be spent doing notes of some kind and filling out the Bar application form. But at least I'll be away from this boring hellhole of a place.

The doctor is in

I tried out the new Fracture demo, and I'm both impressed and a little disappointed at the same time. The ability to raise or lower the landscape and provide NPCs with some cover is a neat idea. I just sat there for a few minutes just seeing how high I could make the ground. Although it's in 3rd person, it's not directly behind the player like in GoW, giving you a better opportunity to look around and actually see what cover you can hide behind. The grenades are quite interesting as well, such as the sticky bombs that you can shoot onto structures and blow up their supports. The voicework, even though just a demo, was actually not that bad.
However, the armour and character faces simply look plastic, and you run like you're carrying some baseballs in your crotchular area. The ability to zoom in for an easier shot at the enemy like in GoW is not that helpful, since the zoom doesn't really go in that far.
I can see it being fun in multiplayer as you shoot the ground, and suddenly there's a nice hill there for cover. Or you could simply eliminate your enemy's hill by lowering with the gun or the "lowering" grenade. Should keep your gaming fingers on their toes.

A step up in the right direction

I've finally finished basic training (unwillingly) and fell into the horrible, terrible world of Ranked and Social playlists. =/ No more easy kills in Snowbound, now that the shields have been taken out. Instead, I get a betrayal in Shotty Snipers (thanks a lot, asswipe!), left alone in Social Skirmish Territories(yeah, ok buttmunchers), and abandoned by a team mate in Multi-Team towards the end (yeah, SORRY for not being as great as you, Mr. Lieutenant, but I'm just playing for fun; don't take it so seriously and just give up like a pansy). The night finally got a bit more rewarding in a Social Slayer Pit match; no, our team didn't win, but at least I was pitted with more evenly matched people (I think maybe one player was a girl). Otherwise, I'm just going to stick to Matchmaking during the day, when the younger crowd are on. ^_^;

Doing study notes for the MBE is taking longer than I thought it would. 2 days, and I'm still not done with Criminal law. Not to mention including all the Model Penal Code changes, even though it's not even really law. =/ *sigh*

Games to look forward to buying:
-Guilty Gear 2: Overture (come on, Sol Badguy's hot)
-Dead Space
-Braid
-Tales of Vesperia
-Infinite Undiscovery (maybe)
-Fracture
-Far Cry 2 (...possibly; the original is kind of fun, but unexpectedly hard, even on the easy setting)
